pet's needs.
Osteopathy aims to alleviate the dysfunction of the diseased joints by manipulation of the body. It is commonly assumed that the technique is only applied to the joints of the spine but in fact every joint in dogs and cats (and those outside the hoof in the equine patient) can be manipulated and treated. A joint is made up of bone, tendon, ligaments and muscle and by acting on these structures you can also affect the blood and nerve supply to the joint. This can help towards the return of an injured part of the body back to fitness and normal function.
What happens in a consultation?
Treatment of animals can only be carried out after a referral from a veterinary surgeon. A history of the condition will then be taken along with observations from the owner. A physical exam will then establish the area affected before the appropriate treatment can be administered. This normally takes up to half an hour depending on the condition being treated. Advice on managing the problem or further treatments will be given and any questions answered.
